Darlene & James were married last month on a rainy, overcast day - and we couldn't have asked for a better situation! We had a perfect break in the day and were able to sneak outside on two separate occasions to photograph with the happy couple. After having photographed their engagement session, we had a great time shooting - Darlene and Jim are just so sweet with each other and were happy to ignore me while I chased them around downtown Albany with a camera. St. Mary's church in Albany was a sight to be seen - lucky we were able to get in early and set up some awesome lighting. And the State Room lived up to it's slogan, "the best kept secret in Albany." An amazing location, meal and space... AND so close to so many great photography spots in downtown Albany. You only have to walk out the front door to find something fun to shoot. Also my first time working with Tom from All Around Sound, though I had heard many good things (all true). Tom is a real pro, and very considerate of his clients. A trait that can't be underestimated on your wedding day! Thanks so much to Jim and Darlene for inviting us to help with their wedding photography - and congratulations again! Best wishes!

The updates are long overdue - but here we are in the thick of the spring wedding season... so bring on the blog!! Angela and Time were married on a BEAUTIFUL April evening at Longfellow's here in Saratoga. Here's a peek at the highlight reel for the wedding - great job by Ray shooting this great video! Congratulations Erica & Brendon! I knew they were going to be a fun couple when they suggested meeting for a beer to discuss their wedding plans. I met Erica at Make Me Fabulous in Ballston Spa where Alayne and the girls did just that! Thanks to MMF for welcoming me in to photograph amongst all of the hair, makeup, and mimosas... Then we headed back to Longfellow's to finish dressing and get ready to meet Brendon for a chilly first look! I think his face says it all as he opened the doors to see his soon to be wife. If you've ever wondered whether or not to set up a first look or not on your wedding day, feel free to e-mail or call, I'd be happy to discuss the ups and downs of both scenarios - your photographer should never try to talk you into anything you weren't interested in. The most important thing to me on your wedding day is that you are HAPPY! If you aren't happy, you won't look good in any of the photos! There was no shortage of happiness between Erica and Brendon - with many thanks to Gerri and the wonderful staff at Longfellow's - no matter how many times I work there, or what the circumstances might be, they always come through with a great meal, and great experience! And making the experience even better throughout the night was having the always professional, always enjoyable company of Mike Garrasi from Music Man Entertainment. Mike won't annoy you, won't lead line dances and pose for the camera - but he WILL keep everyone dancing, have a positive, supporting attitude - and play great music! Well done Mike - always good to work with you and Gerri. The Boathouse in October

Remember when it was sunny and warm outside?!?! If not - look at these photos. What a beautiful day Jamin and Jennifer had to get married last October. The ceremony and reception took place at The Boathouse on Lake George. The day came off without a hitch - and it's a great venue, especially for a smaller, more intimate wedding. Rich Ortiz kept everyone dancing all night - which is amazing. Not often that you are fortunate enough to work with a single musician that can keep everyone happy and dancing all by himself! Rich is a great choice, especially for smaller venues where you want live music but can't fit a full band, or when you want something fun and a bit different than the "wedding norm." I've known Jennifer and Jamin for a few years now, and it was so much fun to take part in their wedding day. They should teach a course in "being happy and laid back on your wedding day!" It really comes through in the photos - and I thank them again and again for including me in their special day. Congratulations!! Saratoga Springs Modeling Shoot Fall 2010

Here are a few photos from a fun modeling shoot we did here in Saratoga last fall. I always love getting outside and shooting with the natural light. When we're in the studio, we always strive to make the lighting look as natural as possible - and when it's 5 degrees outside... we're stuck in the studio! (At least for this type of shoot.) To me, the best part of being outside isn't the lighting though - it's the feeling of freedom you see in the subjects you are photographing. There is nothing like being outside in open space, rather than being trapped a certain distance from the light, or against a wall in the studio, etc... Looking forward to spring and more great headshot and modeling shoots!

Looking at the time when I last posted, I bet you can guess my New Year's Resolution... So here I am back blogging. As it turns out, someone other than you is actually following this, or WAS. Our business is booming, and in large part thanks to social media such as Facebook. But some of you insist on not joining the FB world - or wish to stay anonymous and "not my Facebook Friend." I'm okay with that, as long as you enjoy the photos and leave a comment when you feel so compelled! Best wishes for a Happy New Year, and enjoy the new photos as they come online. Julia & Matt

Let me summarize. It's raining, the hair salon is running about thirty minutes behind, the groom gets trapped in the elevator WITH the photographer, and the limo breaks down on the way to the ceremony. So if "rain on your wedding day is good luck," then Julia and Matt must have hit the jackpot with this one!! What's the moral here? They still got married, they still got great photos, and they still partied. As much as everyone wants to have that perfect sunny day, it doesn't always happen, though you've just spent thousands of dollars to plan this once in a lifetime event. Julia and Matt were so much fun to work with! Neither one of them seemed even remotely affected by any of this - and when it came time to see each other, it seemed that everything was suddenly right in the world. First off, Julia is beautiful, and Matt's no slouch either - who doesn't love a man in uniform! The Hall of Springs put together yet another outstanding event for us, always a pleasure to work there - with beautiful interiors, exteriors, the entire state park at our disposal, and the outstanding catering of One Reputation. It was easy to see how loved these two were by family and friends, particularly when Matt's brother stood to deliver one of the most heartwarming best man toasts I've ever heard. It sounded like they shared an utopian brotherhood as children... luckily I held my tears back, because as it turns out, Matt's mom gave me the "real story" which I'm sure was much more accurate! (Though not nearly as touching!) I've known Matt and Julia now for over a year, having photographed there engagement session in the spring of 2009, and as much as I'm happy to see them married, I'm sad that it has already come and gone - I was really looking forward to it! Luckily we'll have the pictures to prove the day was a success, and if you ever decide to renew your vows and throw a party for 150 people, please let me know! I'll be there in a heartbeat! Congratulations again to Julia and Matt - may you have a long and happy life together as husband and wife! Hiland Golf Course Wedding

Congratulations to Diana and Will! They were married a few weekends ago this month at the Hiland Golf Course in Queensbury, NY. I am always impressed with the professionalism and beauty of this venue. I wish I had the opportunity to work there even more! For those of you who have attended a Jewish wedding, you know that it is a photographer's DREAM! There are so many great traditions throughout the day, from the groom's "unveiling" of the bride before signing the Ketubah, or the breaking of the bread before dinner and the dancing of the Hora when the couple is hoisted into the air by their friends and family. Diana and Will's wedding was exciting from the first moment I arrived to find Will racing around on his cell phone coordinating and making sure everything was perfect before Diana's arrival. Well done, Will. The other excitement came as a result of the pouring rain stopping just as we started the family portraits before the ceremony - and the sun breaking through right at dusk to give us some beautiful late day light outside on the golf course. Also my first time working with videographer Al Woodard, who was an absolute joy to have with us throughout the day! DJ Andy Pratt kept everyone dancing as he always does - I always recommend Andy to my prospective clients, knowing that if they are happy with their DJ, they'll be happy with their reception - and I won't have to look for something to photograph since everyone will be on the dance floor! Thanks Andy. Finally, I just have to say, that I was a little nervous about photographing Diana and Will since I had not had a chance to meet with them before the wedding. Living so far across the country, our schedules never permitted us to meet face to face, only through e-mail, Facebook, and the phone. I always like to KNOW each couple beforehand so that we have a working relationship the day of the wedding. This just wasn't possible, so I would like to personally THANK both Diana and Will for being so completely amazing to work with and so willing to just go with the flow, and let their day unfold without worrying about me or what I was photographing, or what I was asking of them. Jen and Dan are married! What a great day we had - back at St. John the Evangelist in Schenectady, a GORGEOUS church that we LOVE photographing in and followed up with another amazing reception at Saratoga National. Some couples come to me with lists of formal photos that they want, some come to me with lists of special moments they HAVE to have or certain groups they want photographed together at the reception. Not Jen and Dan - their big request - we need a picture of our dog in a tux!! And then it turned into, "let's play frisbee with him," and then "let's get a shot of him looking out the window of the house at Dan on his way to the church." Now that's my kind of couple!! And that's how your wedding SHOULD be!! Low stress and FUN!!! Jen and Dan had a great day, and I know it because I never once had to ask them to smile or act happy for the camera. They were just plain happy to be there, happy to be married, and happy to party... and I was happy to help! The staff at Saratoga National once again outdid themselves, bending over backwards to make sure everything was just perfect and that everyone was well taken care of. This was a particularly poignant wedding for me, since I was there to photograph Jen's sister just one year ago. Seeing her family again and being in their house to share in the wedding day excitement brought back all sorts of great memories from last year. If only every couple I photographed was someone I knew - even if that means simply shooting an engagement session before hand with the bride and groom, or meeting for a glass of wine - they're comfortable, making the day a stress free event for everyone. Jen and Nick were married on the sunniest, windiest day in May! I just adore photographing here at St. John the Evangelist in Schenectady. It is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL church! I should have given you two a discount for getting married in such a great church. I've known Jen and Nick for about a year now, having photographed their engagement session last summer, it was so nice to be there for their wedding. Jen, you looked GORGEOUS! Nick, you looked okay too, for a guy... Actually, the look on Nick's face was priceless when he saw his new bride walking down the aisle. He did sort of this coy, I'm looking at you, not looking at you, sort of thing and his best man just laughed at him. Loved it! Grooms take note - this is what we're looking for out of you!! Photographing over at Union College was a blast, I'm so glad we went for it - though we may have lost a few bridal party members (blown away in the gale force winds) - it was well worth it! The reception at Mallozzi's was well orchestrated as always, and it was my first time working with Mike from Music Man Entertainment. Mike did a great mash-up sort of thing for Jen and her father during their father-daughter dance that was worthy of mention (and several laughs!) It was great working with Mike, he is very laid back and extremely easy to work with. Hopefully the first of many weddings together in the future. Beating the weather...

Kerri & Sean certainly beat the weather during their May wedding on Lake George! I couldn't believe it. I've never seen the weather be so miserable, turn so nice so fast, and immediately turn HORRIBLE as fast as it did! We started shooting outside in the light rain, ending up under cover for some heavier showers, and within about five minutes the sky opened up to reveal a perfectly blue sky and 70 degree temperatures. Luckily this sunny spell came just before the outdoor ceremony and the staff at The Fort William Henry did an outstanding job of getting everything set up outside for "PLAN A." The ceremony was beautiful, and perfectly timed, because within about three minutes of the bride and groom's exit, the chairs lifted up off the ground, tree limbs came crashing down and we had a massive downpour! Amazing. And here's the picture to prove it. As amazing as the weather was, the real story was Kerri & Sean. I don't think I caught either of them without a genuine, full blown smile plastered to their face the entire day long. I just love shooting weddings like this. Sometimes photographers throw out suggestions to newlywed couples to hug, or kiss, or hold hands, but if you can't smile without being asked on your own wedding day, that's just no good! Never a worry here. Kerri, Sean, and both of their families were such a joy to be around, and the wedding day was a resounding success because of it. I always tell couples that if they have fun at their wedding, so will everyone else. And these two just proved me right once again. Thanks Kerri & Sean, and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Matrimonio Riva

So thanks to Kristen & Marco - I'm officially an international wedding photographer! As if Kristen & Marco weren't amazing enough, they had to go and get married in the Italian countryside at a vineyard and monastery built in the 13th century... until going to Italy, I'd never even seen anything that old! And though it wasn't the sort of beautiful sunny evening we all prayed for, it wasn't difficult to get great shots of these two! I can't thank you enough Kristen for saying YES to going out in the rain to shoot! You are my hero! I'm not usually the photographer who talks brides into trashing their dresses - but having traveled so far to be there, I just couldn't leave without photographing outside, at least for five minutes - and that's about how long we had before being absolutely soaked! And though one of things I will always remember about this wedding is the rain and the mud, even more so I will remember how no amount of bad weather could spoil the love between Kristen and Marco or the amazing time had by everyone involved. As I stood in the chapel and watched Kristen and Marco exchange vows through tear filled eyes, I couldn't help but cry a happy tear myself - seeing the hundreds of people that came together from all around the world - Europe, North America, Australia - just to witness these few minutes. Had I not been photographing, it would still have been well worth the trip. Congratulations Kristen & Marco! There will no doubt be another post with additional photos! Viva Italia!

Inn at Saratoga

My first time shooting here - and what a pleasant surprise! Amanda and Riley were married just four short weeks ago on a BEAUTIFUL sunny, albeit cold, April afternoon. This is a charming venue for a small to moderate sized event - newly renovated rooms (which made for some great bridal prep photography) and a nice space that opens to an outdoor patio for those that need fresh air. And after three hours of dancing - everyone could use a little fresh air! Though I've known Amanda's sister and brother-in-law for quite some time now, I hadn't had the pleasure of spending too much time with her and Riley before the wedding. I feel like I owe them one for being so amazing to photograph! I truly had a great afternoon at the wedding, saw some old friends and hopefully made some new ones. It's alway exciting to get good weather for an April wedding - and even more so when the couple is so clearly in love and perfect for each other. Longfellow's in April

Erin & Steve were married on a crystal clear April afternoon at Longfellow's last week. The last few times we've been over at Longfellow's I've written about how many great options there are for indoor photography - but as you can see, Ray captured some beautiful scenes outside with Erin & Steve. For those of you who are asking, "whose Ray?" Ray and I have worked together for several years and on many many weddings! Enchanted Wedding Expo

This past weekend we participated in the Enchanted Wedding Expo at the Saratoga City Center. It was our first time at the show...as vendors. The actual first time we went, Rosie and I took our wedding bands off and pretended to be newly engaged...so we could scope out the show before deciding to participate...probably unnecessary, but fun nonetheless. This weekend we met hundreds of brides and grooms face to face and made some great new friends with several local wedding professionals. In addition to taking part in the show, we were also given ad space in the Enchanted Wedding magazine that you may have seen around Saratoga. Here's a peek at our ad, and a shot of our incredibly talented new photographer/videographer Ray Stockwell. Ray's been a great addition to our staff, giving our clients an additional photography option for their wedding day AND he's a great videographer to boot! Thanks to the staff at Saratoga Today for making this show go off without a hitch. We're already looking forward to another great show next year! Glen Sanders Mansion Winter Wedding

Becky & Pat were married on a BEAUTIFUL February afternoon. Though it was cold, they had some absolutely gorgeous light all day long. Glen Sanders Mansion did an outstanding job once again with the entire afternoon. Mitch Frasier, one of my absolute favorite singer/guitarists played the cocktail hour and DJ'ed the entire reception. Always good to see him, and HEAR him. Do yourself a favor, go to his website and just listen to one of the audio clips! And the florals by Mark Felthousen were just stunning. I had not yet worked a wedding with Mark, but I hope this is the first of many. It's easy to take great photos of flowers and centerpieces when they look so good! The ceremony and reception were great fun, but one of my favorite parts of the wedding day is the hour or two just before the ceremony. Everyone is excited, buzzing about, and I'm trying to keep from getting covered in hairspray... The bridal prep pictures tend to be some of my favorites, just because they are always so spontaneous and purely candid. AND, I get the opportunity to meet the bride's family dog! I had to include this photo, as my fellow photographer, Ray, told me, "that's the cutest dog I've seen in years!" It's always fun to get a glimpse into the bride's life before marriage, and I really think it helps us to connect for the rest of the day. And on a final note ... thank goodness for Pat! It's not every day that you're lucky enough to meet a groom who is truly willing to be photographed, but Pat grinned from ear to ear the entire day long! You only have to look at Becky to know WHY he was smiling. And if you know Becky, then you know why he couldn't stop smiling. I just love being part of these experiences every weekend. It constantly reminds me of how much I love my wife and my wedding day all over again. Winter Wedding at Longfellow's

Congratulations Sara and Michael! (Married just a few weeks ago at Longfellow's here in Saratoga.) It's such an amazing place to photograph in the winter - with the courtyard lit up and candles burning around the water and bridge. Rebekah and Geri did an amazing job, as usual, making the space look beautiful and taking special care of the bride and groom. The flower girls and ring bearers were in rare form, being cute and smiling for the camera. Rosie and I always joke that kids are an important part of weddings. When the adults get bored of having their picture taken, the kids are ready to do something cute! Congratulations again to Sara and Michael - may this be your first of many happy memories in your newly married life together! Yes, we shoot commercial work too! It keeps us busy in the winter - funny that nobody seems to want to get married in the dead of winter in upstate NY!! Well, that's not entirely true - we have one more wedding left before 2010 and two in February. All of them very much INSIDE (unless it starts snowing and I can talk them into going outside!) Here's one of our latest commercial ventures for Livad Skin Care. Check out their brand new website here. We did all of their online product photography, partnering with my friend Matt Ratto at Luxus Media. The website looks great Matt! Well done!

Lisa & Jason

Lisa and Jason were married just a few weeks ago at Saratoga National. The whole day for me was an absolute blast. Both families were so incredibly sweet and easy going - it made my job a real pleasure. It all comes back to the bride and groom - when they're happy - EVERYONE is happy. Lisa's father even had a chance to show off that new furniture at the house - (don't worry Tom - there will be MANY photos of the furniture to come in the complete online gallery!) It's always easier when the bride and her family plan on having the photographer to the house. It gives us all time to get to know each other, so when the wedding and reception roll around, everyone feels comfortable. Though at one point the bridesmaids did catch me lying on the hallway floor to photograph Lisa's wedding shoes! The ridicule I may have took for it was a small sacrifice for the sake of art... As usual, everything at Saratoga National was beautiful - the staff, always helpful, let us borrow a few golf carts to shoot down by the bridge and ponds along the course as seen above. Finally, I have to say that I've probably seen hundreds of cake toppers, but this one was probably my absolute favorite. It's the first time I've seen anyone use one passed down through generations of their family - so I HAD to photograph it. Lisa & Jason - CONGRATULATIONS again! I wish you both all of the happiness a marriage can bring, and keep an eye out for the online gallery in just a few short weeks or less!

Happy Halloween and Happy Wedding! Sarah and Matt were married October 31st at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Niskayuna by Deacon Dick Thiesen. I had never photographed there before and what a surprise to see how beautiful it was inside! Thanks to the Deacon for a beautiful ceremony as well. Their reception followed at Glen Sanders Mansion - I can only tell you how good their food is so many times, and the staff is ALWAYS classy. Unfortunately, it POURED outside all night. Fortunately for all of us, we were inside, the music was great thanks to our DJ, Russ, from Piano Man and the dancing was non-stop until the end of the night. And how great was that "through the years" slideshow?!? I LOVE this picture of Sarah watching and tearing up! For those of you who were at the wedding and are friends with Matt, GO WILDCATS - I thought the UK cake was a nice touch. Congratulations Sarah and Matt! We wish you a long happy life together!

Congratulations to Jackie and Andy! They were married on a COLD October afternoon just a few weeks ago. We still had some great foliage though and were able to photograph under a beautiful maple tree right next to the Museum of Dance that had turned a bright yellow. I spent the morning with the bridesmaids getting ready and we had a blast at the hair salon and back at the house. I had to post some of the orchid photos - how many hours did you girls spend snipping these orchids?! There was a full orchid team at the house just cutting, bagging, and handling the hundreds of flowers they used at the ceremony and reception. It was definitely worth it, they looked great! As always, the staff at the National Museum of Dance did a wonderful job supported by Kimberly from Classe Catering - they planned a delicious barbecue dinner that was served out in the courtyard. Besides the orchids and the BBQ, my favorite part of the night may have been Andy's family on the dance floor. Andy, I don't think your dad left the dance floor from the time the music started until the DJ was leaving the parking lot!! (And we've got pictures to prove it.) Way to go Jackie and Andy, congratulations again!

Wedding on the Lake

Congratulations Shama & Dave! Shama and Dave were married at the Lodge on Echo Lake just a few short weeks ago. I had never photographed there before, and I was quite pleased with how well everything was run. I love shooting near the water and in the Adirondacks, so this wedding was a dream for me. The weather turned out to be absolutely perfect for us. Breezy down by the lake, Shama's hair was being blown around like she was on the cover of Vogue. Okay, it was cold. But with the forecast threatening rain all week, we were thrilled with what we were given! Right at the end of the night, I heard Shama comment how much she liked seeing all of the stars so far north. That inspired me to shoot this shot of them standing on the deck of the lodge before I headed home. The trickery is all in the camera, taking a two shot multiple exposure of their moment outside. Capturing the lodge in one exposure, and the stars in another. I love shooting these landscapes and including the bride and groom in them. Andrea and Tony were married last weekend on the East Side... of Lake George. Dunham's Bay Lodge is a perfect location for couples wishing to get married on Lake George without dealing with the traffic and general business that exists near downtown. It's always a pleasure to photograph there, and couples love being able to sneak down to the beach for a quick photo shoot. A beach with mountains in the distance - an all around GREAT view! I met Andrea as she was getting ready in the cabins, excited, nervous, but mostly just excited that the wedding day had arrived. The bridesmaids were buzzing all around helping her, and I knew I was going to be spending the day with a fun group. It always amazes me how many weddings seem to ESCAPE the threat of bad weather! It was cloudy and overcast right up to the moment that Andrea and her father stepped outside and began their walk down the isle. I couldn't believe it!! Here are a few photos from the day. Who doesn't love a bride who smiles this big?! That sort of positive attitude really rubs off on the guests... and when I left later that evening, every single one of them was wearing that same big smile - maybe it was Andrea and Tony, maybe it was Total Entertainment spinning the music, or maybe it was that great bar they have at Dunham's Bay. Who knows, who cares, they're married now, and had a blast!

What a great bunch of fall weekend weddings we've had this year! We squeaked by the weather a few weeks ago and were able to get Kara and Bo married before the rains came. They were married in a beautiful lakeside service in western NY. With the clouds rolling in and wind picking up, we were able to sneak some beautiful shots down by the lake before dark - we even got Kara to cross over the half submerged dock for the sake of art - now that's my kind of bride...Bo's kind of bride too! Soul Session provided the music and had the entire crowd on their feet the whole night! These are the kind of weddings I live for. There's always something to photograph when 200 people are on the dance floor. There isn't always some place to stand though, so I thank the heavens that I'm tall. Long awaited at Longfellow's...

Well, let me clarify that. Beth and Matt were high school sweethearts, so for them, this wedding HAS been long awaited. But on that crisp September evening, it certainly didn't take long to see that they were STILL sweethearts. People always ask what it's like to photograph so many weddings, and to be doing them every weekend. Isn't it boring? Isn't it stressful? And I always answer them the same way - it all depends on the bride and groom. If they are great people, and they are in love, the experience is ALWAYS GREAT. Well, I won't keep you in suspense, Beth and Matt were GREAT. Sometimes I have to take a moment to realize that, though I work at weddings every weekend, I am being paid to not only do what I love (be a photographer) but to do it for a couple in love themselves. It's really an amazing situation to find yourself in. Look at the sun streaking through that photo of them kissing!! And to think we were worried about weather all day long, only to have the sun pop right out of the clouds when her father walked her down the aisle. Way to go Longfellow's! I think Rebekah and the staff there arranged specifically for it. And again, kudos to the staff at Longfellow's. As always, they really go out of their way to keep the bride and groom happy, keep everything running smoothly, and serve great food. Congratulations to the newlyweds!! It was just last weekend that Rosie and I spent the day with Ryan and Sarah. No more rain, we were in the midst of the most beautiful weather we've had all summer. Ryan and Sarah were a breath of fresh air, the definition of a relaxed, happy, and loving couple. The Canfield Casino always has a way of making me stop and remind myself how much I love my job. From sneaking outside for pictures at dusk, to the first announcement of the bridal party through those grand doors with the chandeliers glowing in the background, you couldn't ask for a classier reception location. Classe Catering really outdid themselves on this one as well. I found myself photographing the food during dinner instead of eating. The spiced apple and pumpkin soup served in a half pumpkin bowl did me in. Greg Frasier from Frasier Entertainment provided the background music and was a true pleasure to work with. I've heard so much about him, and he lived up to all of the expectations. Shannon Whitney from Wedding Planning Plus also helped to coordinate the day with her play by play keeping everyone on schedule. Unlike many wedding coordinators, Shannon was so relaxed and pleasant, it rubbed off on Ryan and Sarah, from the time I started photographing until I packed up to go home, they were grinning from ear to ear. Well done Shannon! After all was said and done, Ryan and Sarah remind me of how special marriage can be, and how wonderful the day really is. Take it from a married guy... best day of my life! Maybe that's why I chose to photograph weddings every weekend.

Yes, that's right, we got rained on AGAIN just a few weeks ago. It seems that if you want to make sure it doesn't rain on your wedding you should get married inside. The good news is that they had a great time and got some great shots even IN the rain! I loved shooting the bride and groom underneath the umbrella. It forces them to stay close and takes their mind off of the camera. They're too busy trying to stay dry! We stopped in downtown Albany for a few photos on the steps across from the plaza and then on toGlen Sanders Mansion for the reception. It was a party unlike any other. The staff at the mansion did a marvelous job as always, but the real highlight, and first for me even, was the Albanian folk dancing and traditional Albanian band they had at the wedding. Typically you will see the guys hiding in the corners of the dance floor - not at this reception! The REAL MEN were on the floor leading the way. All in all, it was a rousing success. She said yes, he said yes, they left together, and they've pictures to prove it. Congratulations!

Well - I always dreamed of being able to photograph my own wife on her wedding day... but I had other (more important) things to do. So, this was the perfect wedding for me, my wife's sister got married! Rosie and I spent last weekend in St. Louis partying, photographing, eating Mom's cooking, listening to Pop's stories, hitting golf balls with my brother-in-law, and most importantly spending Annie and Steve's wedding day with them. As I say time and time again, it's always fun to photograph a couple so clearly in love, especially when they are so close to you. The church looked great thanks to Pop and the decorating committee! And the service was made memorable by Ross and Rosie singing for the newlyweds. The entire day was a blast, but I couldn't make an entry here without giving a shout out to Steve's "best men," who delivered the knockout punch with a full length, fully produced music video as their toast to Annie & Steve. Hysterical. As Rosie just told me...looking over my shoulder as I type... "May they stay in love forever."

Well, I know it isn't everyone's wish on their wedding day. It sounds like a bad thing, but truth be told, it led to so many different lighting situations, that their wedding produced such a variety of different photos, I had to purchase an extra hard drive just to store them all! Okay, I needed the extra memory ANYWAY, but you get the point. Another great ceremony (inside this time) at the National Museum of Dance, and a beautiful reception at the Hall of Springs. Quiet Water

Well, I've officially joined the ranks of other North Country photographers. We bought a canoe a few weeks ago and I've been dying to take it out for a test run. You know, make sure it floats and enables me to sneak up on wildlife to photograph without it running into the woods from the paparazzi. Well, I had a rare Sunday off last week and took the canoe up to the Green Mountain National Forest. Good news, it floats, bad news, it poured while I was on the lake. Good news, I kept the camera dry and was able to get this nice shot of the lily pad just about to blossom. More bad news, wildlife doesn't like getting caught in the rain any more than I do. Bummer. Rosie and I are planning some forays into the wilderness later this summer during a break in the wedding action. We're hoping to see a half-submerged bull moose with a bald eagle balanced on his antlers. Is that too much to ask?

Austin & Elizabeth were married on June 13th in a touching ceremony (conducted by Elizabeth's father!) near Lake Luzerne, NY. We were able to capture so many great moments throughout the ceremony and immediately afterwards, and it was a good thing - because as soon as we finished photographing the bridal party and headed inside for the reception, it POURED down for the next four hours. They say that when it rains on your wedding day it is a sign of good luck, but when it doesn't start raining until AFTER the outdoor portion is complete, it's REALLY good luck! As a side note, thank you so much to the staff at the Peniel Bible Camp on Lake Luzerne. They did an amazing job with the reception. I could be wrong, but I don't think they do many weddings at the facility - and they were just great. Oh, and the new deck outside looked beautiful - go Steve!! If you see Austin & Elizabeth around town, congratulate them - they're newlyweds for goodness sake!

Well, we lucked out with the weather AGAIN on our final wedding weekend of May 2009 - our busiest month to date here at the studio. Here are some photos from Julie & Brandon's wedding in Brant Lake, NY. I've known Julie for years now, and it was such a pleasure to witness her wedding (AND photograph it!) She looked beautiful, and I've never her seen her so happy - what a day. The staff at Point O' Pines did a wonderful job with the reception and ceremony, from the dinner to the bonfire that followed. This last photo of the bonfire is actually a 3 shot multiple exposure - no "Photoshopping" necessary! Point O' Pines is a great location for those couples wishing to be married outside, in a beautiful setting, and some place other than a banquet hall or church. This year's Cantina Kids Fun Run raised over $20,000!! Thanks to all of the volunteers who made it such a success. We were invited to capture the race for Cantina as well as for the Saratoga Hospital (the race raised money to help build the new emergency department at the hospital). The weather turned out to be nothing short of spectacular - and just as the cermony was about to begin, the sun streaked right through the courtyard and gave us the perfect soft lighting we're always hoping for! Matt & Elizabeth were married a few weeks back on a beautiful May afternoon. With another great wedding at Bethesda Episcopal, right here in Saratoga, we headed to Congress Park for photos, and off the Arches Room at The Gideon Putnam. The arches room is an absolutely perfect room for a smaller, more intimate wedding. In addition to it's perfect size for such an event, it has a TON of natural light, which we LOVE. Matt & Elizabeth were such a pleasure to spend the day with. I knew they were smart and beautiful - but when Brett Dennen's "The One Who Loves You the Most" started for their first dance, I found out they were cool too! (I downloaded the entire album about one hour after the wedding...)

SD Atelier

If you've never heard of them, look them up! SD Atelier Architecture is right on Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs and has been creating beautiful and functional designs since 1996. Their architectural projects include both residential and commercial ventures. If you're ever in need of an ambulance station, like this one we recently photographed, or even for a cabin in the Adirondacks, Sue and Don Davis of SD Atelier could be the resource you are looking for! As a side note, this particular photo was a 4 exposure shot, the only way to get enough light into the lens AFTER sunset WITHOUT getting all of the traffic on busy Route 9. To minimize the presence of a four lane highway in front of the building, I had to be low to the ground, so I set the tripod up in a ditch across the street and waited for the perfect light. It only happens about an half hour after sunset (or before sunrise), and only lasts about five minutes or less! The waiting game is always worth it for a shot like this though.

We had an amazing time at Frank & Lindsay's wedding in Erie, PA last weekend. It was a perfect weekend from start to finish. Not only was Lindsay as beautiful as ever - her and Frank have such great personalities, it really set the tone for the entire event. We photographed the rehearsal dinner on Friday, met the family and friends, and spent the wedding day just having a ball. We photographed all around the church, in the trolley with the wedding party, down at the waterfront on Lake Erie, and at the reception hall - a converted railway station (Union Station). I hope everyone had as much fun as I. I love traveling for weddings, near or far, and it was truly an honor to be part of Lindsay & Frank's wedding day - I wish them all the luck in the world.

Well, Rosie was out of town for the night for her sister's bridal shower - so I just couldn't bring myself to sit at home alone! I found this carnival happening (well, not really HAPPENING) but GLOWING in the mall parking lot. I love the color combinations between warm and cool. It reminds me of a 1st semester photography assignment. Funny how it still works as a good photograph years after graduation. I guess they knew what they were talking about! Anyhow, this must be a sure sign that summer is on it's way - the carnival is in town!

Last night was one of those nights, but on a tight schedule, we were able to find some great light yesterday amongst all of the clouds. James and Megan were married this weekend at Bethesda Episcopal Church right here in downtown Saratoga Springs. I love this church. It's beautiful inside and out, and it happens to be directly across the street from us. We just managed to dodge the rain, and were able to get some great photos in Congress Park before the reception at The Washington Inn. I love photographing there as well - there are so many windows, and with the large front porch and porch swing, there are many opportunities for natural light photography. Jessica and Ryan were married on a BEAUTIFUL (and uncharacteristically WARM) March evening in Albany. Following the ceremony at St. Margaret Mary's, we all trekked down to Albany's Washington Park for photos with the bridal party. With the hazy sunlight filtering through the trees, we captured some great shots of everyone on the bridge over the lake. The reception took place at the Mohawk River Country Club in Rexford, NY. If you are still looking for a reception venue near Schenectady - give them a chance. They always do a nice job there; the setup is perfect for the cocktail hour, formal photos on the golf course or in the gazebo nearby, and plenty of natural light through the large windows (spoken like a true photographer!)

Sunday, Rosie and I attended our first local bridal show. Typically, our clients first meet us online, and this was a great way to "put a face" on Rob Spring Photography for almost two hundred local "brides to be." It turned out to be a great experience for the studio, and as luck would have it, we have already made a great connection with a beautiful couple we will be photographing later this year. The Star and Moon Bridal Show was at Longfellow's, one of the most popular local reception venues, and one that we photograph at about once a month. Pictured above is one of our recent Longfellow's weddings in December 2008. As you can see, they do a beautiful job decorating the space at all times of year.

Headshots are a great part of our business. Having moved to Saratoga from New York City, we were surprised to find out just how many local actors there are of all ages in the local area. One of our favorite jobs is helping young actors with their first professional headshot, either before they head off to college, or before they make the move to New York or LA. The cold weather has driven us to be inside the studio lately, but as you can see, the studio lighting is yielding some beautiful results.

Compliance, LP is a legal staffing company now based in NYC, with facilities throughout the northeast. This shoot took me to Manhattan to photograph their midtown office "with a view." And what a view it was, unobstructed to the south, all the way to 34th Street and the Empire State Building. I love working down in NYC, and it is such a short trip from Saratoga Springs. It's always fun to visit with friends who still live there and get new photos for clients who are based in the city.

Just as in much of my portrait work, I love to utilize the available and natural light, adding just a hint of studio lighting here and there to make the photo really stand out.

Harvest & Hearth is a great new pizza place on Saratoga Lake. They specialize in wood fired artisan pizzas, using all local and organic ingredients. Well, it's November 1st and the last of the fall foliage is making its way to the ground. I snapped this photo last weekend on my way home from a wedding near Albany. I've always enjoyed the last weeks of October when the leaves turn a rust color and the sunsets seem to last for an hour!

Lauren & Justin were married Saturday, September 27th at the nearby Saratoga Golf & Polo Club. After hearing predictions of rain (a 70% chance) we lucked out and had a gorgeous day with great light. Everyone was happy to be outside! They were a pleasure to photograph, and I had a great time at the wedding. Here are a few of the highlights from their big day.

Apple Cider Time!

Well, it's that time of year in the northeast, and there's no better place to find apple cider donuts than at Lakeside Farms in Ballston Lake. The farm has been in the family for decades, and it shows! Rosie (my wife) and I started our day with a great breakfast and an educational tour of the cider press (which dates back to the 1890s) We also picked up some decorations for the house, and bought some cider donuts for the short trip back home! The apple barn was bursting with all kinds of apples, pumpkins, gourds, and seasonal vegetables. If you haven't been, go now. Take exit 11 off I-87 and head west for 3 miles. You can't miss it, it's truly picturesque.

This weekend's wedding was a blast for everyone. Michele and Michael were married on September 20th at The Mansion Inn in Rock City Falls, NY. If you've never been there, or stayed there, go now, it's gorgeous. Their event planner, Shannon Rose, did an amazing job with everything! DJ Ody was a hit too, not only covering everyone's requests, but singing, playing the guitar, and getting the crowd involved with a 150 player version of "Name That Tune." Even I had my picture taken here by the flower girls. Here are some highlights of the day.

Well, September and October flew by. Of course, I spent several weeks of September getting married to my beautiful wife, Rosie. Some people take just one day to do it, we took several weeks. Photographing two additional weddings in September kept us quite busy. October was the month to dive into food photography, as illustrated here for "Cantina," a great new Mexican restaurant in downtown Saratoga. Making food look good in photos is harder than I thought, it NEVER laughs at my bad jokes...

The Proposal

Well gentlemen, it looks like you can no longer JUST propose. A few weeks ago I was hired to photograph an actual proposal in Congress Park. Serious undercover work. What a great idea though! Recently, Rosie and I made the trip to St. Louis for an amazing wedding. This was one of my favorite shots from the day. There were terrible thunderstorms just hours earlier, and everyone was happy to see the setting sun appear during the reception. Especially me, since it helped turned this beautiful moment into a great photograph for the bride and groom!
